Do relationships inevitably cause the demise of friendships?
This is one of those great questions that happen to be on par with questioning the meaning of life. Why is it when new relationships develop, people are so quick to “abandon ship” on their friends? After all, friends should be there for both the ups and downs, good times and bad. Friends are not mere janitorial staff to pick up the pieces when it all falls apart, but it happens.
This lovely situation, which I am sure is universal, happens to be a rather a prickly constant in my life. And the story is always the same-when a new boy toy is around, I become invisible. (I would be cool with my invisibility if it was a sweet, sweet super power that would allow me to get up to no good but sadly, no super power for me). All plans get cancelled with the excuse “I ummmmmm have to ummmmmmmmm stay home and clean my apartment for the seventh time this week” or “I gotta bail” (with no explanation provided). All calls, text and emails stop. One can actually hear the crickets in the background, until the boy toy leaves and then, suddenly, I am super popular and people want a piece of me.
But not this time sweetie. Go get yourself another janitor, I am retired.
If this sounds like a familiar situation the answer, ( which took me the better part of a decade to figure out ), is simple- get new friends.
